The retreating glacier, Columbia Icefield, Icefield Parkway, Alberta
Nobody was talking about climate change (aka “global warming”) back in 1990, but its effects were already visible in the rapidly retreating glaciers all over the world. The Athabasca Glacier currently loses depth at a rate of about 5m/year, has receded more than 1.5 km and lost over half of its volume in the past 125 years. Signs are set up like grave markers along the foot access to the glacier to document this decline.
